Friday 2 October

Speaking Up All Year Round

Purpose - To bring the week’s messages together, show the journey we have been on, demonstrate organisational commitment and establish the next stages of communication, learning and accountability.

Core message - Speak-up Week ends today, but speaking up does not. Every day, staff should be able to share ideas, ask questions and raise concerns. Every day, we must listen, respond and learn.

Staff action:

  • Do not hold on to an issue that may affect people, quality or safety.
  • Use the route that feels appropriate and seek advice if you are uncertain.
  • Continue to share suggestions and feedback.
  • Expect acknowledgment and an explanation of what happens next.

Manager and leader action

  • Reinforce speaking up in routine team communications, supervision and development conversations.
  • Review how concerns, feedback and improvement ideas are recorded and followed up.
  • Identify recurring themes without compromising confidentiality.
  • Share learning and improvement through appropriate governance and communication routes.
  • Continue to promote the available support channels after the campaign.

  • Considering Speak-up Ambassador feedback and succession planning.
  • Aligning future communications with inspection and diagnostic learning.
  • Incorporating a speaking-up feature in the November organisational priorities newsletter.
