The multi-disciplinary team provides a range of services within Roxburghe House.

Physiotherapy

  • Breathing exercises and chest physiotherapy to improve breathlessness, anxiety and treat chest infections.
  • Exercises, mobility aids and splints to improve muscle strength, balance and co-ordination.
  • Treatment of lymphoedema to manage/control limb swelling.
The patient can be seen in the privacy of the Physiotherapy Rehabilitation Room or in the ward setting.

Occupational Therapy

The occupational therapist (OT) aims to help patients achieve their highest possible level of independence with daily living tasks. This may include looking at self-care problems, carrying out tasks at home or social and leisure aspects of each patient's life. The OT can also carry out relaxation training, stress management and teach different ways of trying to conserve energy. If deemed necessary, a visit to the patient's home may be arranged to assess the home situation. Prior to discharge, liaison with community colleagues may take place regarding possible equipment and adaptations required at home, which can be put in place to ensure a safe and successful discharge.

Pharmacy Service

Medicines are a very important part of a patient's treatment. The pharmacist aims to help patients get the most from their prescribed medicines and is available to give advice and information or to discuss any queries. When discharge home is planned the pharmacist will organise a supply of medicines and can also provide a medication plan giving details of the medicines and when to take them. Prior to discharge the pharmacist will discuss any medicine related questions which the patient or their relatives may have. The pharmacist may liaise with the local chemist and GP practice if required.

Chaplain / Spiritual Care

Regardless of Church, religion or belief, a part time chaplain is available for all patients, relatives and carers. People do not have to be religious to ask for the services of the hospital chaplain. As a member of staff, the chaplain is within the unit and makes informal visits as a matter of routine. The chaplain will be happy to make contact with a patient's own religious community or leader if requested. Our small Chapel / Spiritual Room is available to everyone to use. All are welcome to a 15 minute Christian Service held on Sunday mornings.

Social Work Support

A social worker / care manager will be available Monday to Friday and is linked to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary Social Work Department (Tel: 01224 553510). Social work support is provided in confidence for patients, family and friends. The service offers practical help, i.e. provision of care - either personal or domestic and assistance in dealing with financial matters and housing. Alternatively they can provide emotional support to all concerned either in Roxburghe House or at home, depending upon location. An appointment can be made directly with a social worker / care manager or a referral can be made by contacting a member of Roxburghe House staff.

Access to the service is via the patient's ward of admission if input is required. The service provides information, advice, support and education to patients, relatives and staff within the community at any stage of illness.
