Patient Information

This information is for patients and their relative and carers.  If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask a member of staff.

Mobile phones

You can use your mobile phone in many areas of the hospital. However in some areas you can't use your mobile phone as the signals can affect vital medical equipment.  Please check with staff if you are unsure.

Smoking

As of 5 September 2022, it is an offence to smoke within 15 metres of a hospital building. Any closer and you can face a fixed penalty notice of £50 or a fine of up to £1,000 if taken to court. This is a new law introduced by the Scottish Government.

Now that it is an offence, anyone found to be smoking within the 15 metre perimeter will be asked to stop right away. Please do so and remain courteous towards those reminding you of the new no-smoking laws.

People are asked not to smoke on hospital grounds at all. Hospitals are places of health promotion and are used by many people who are particularly vulnerable to the harms and irritations caused by breathing in second-hand smoke. It benefits everyone to keep all areas around hospitals free from health-harming hazards.

Plan your visit to the hospital by bringing a nicotine replacement product, such as gum or a patch, to help reduce cravings. If you need advice on which nicotine replacement product is right for you, ask your pharmacist, or contact our smoking advice service on 08085 202030 about quitting.

We encourage patients to give up smoking. However, if you can't go without smoking and don't want to give up, you can ask ward staff for a nicotine replacement product to help reduce cravings.

Finally, should you see people smoking in the perimeter area please report it to a member of hospital staff.
