Volunteering in Spiritual Care

This page introduces NHS Grampian spiritual care volunteers and their roles.

Royal Cornhill Hospital Sunday Assistants

Volunteers assist patients in Royal Cornhill Hospital to access the Christian worship services that take place on the last Sunday afternoon of each month.

Volunteers will be appropriately trained and have PVG clearance. Volunteers will be over 16 and committed to at least one year of support, building up experience.

Spiritual Care Ward Volunteers

The Spiritual Care Department in NHS Grampian oversees ward volunteers who are trained to offer listening support and companionship to any patients who might welcome some time with them.

These volunteers currently operate across Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Woodend Hospital and Royal Cornhill Hospital.

Ward volunteers are assigned to a particular ward, allowing them to build up good working relationships with staff and some understanding of the kind of health issues being dealt with there. Typically, they come in for a couple of hours each week and have conversations with patients.

As with healthcare chaplains, ward volunteers come with their own commitments and beliefs but are trained to meet people where they are and offer confidential, non-judgmental, person-centred support to everyone they engage with. For many patients, just having someone friendly and interested who has time to spend with them helps to lift their spirits.
