NHS Grampian sets target dates for new hospital to open

NHS Grampian intends to open its new ANCHOR Centre in July 2026, with the Baird Family Hospital following in June 2027.

In board papers published today, ahead of a meeting later this week, the new target dates for the projects – which are estimated to cost a combined £438.6million - were shared.

The board has previously been told the facility will “bring significant benefits to patients, the local community and staff” and in an update will be informed the facilities, both being constructed on the Foresterhill Health Campus, in Aberdeen, “will not open” without a supported NHS Scotland Assure Key Stage Assurance Reviews (KSAR) status.

KSARs provide independent assurance that major NHS construction and refurbishment projects are being planned, designed, and delivered safely – with a focus on infection prevention and control (IPC) and technical compliance.

The ANCHOR Centre is the next significant phase in the development of services for cancer and blood disorder patients, creating much needed purpose-built day and out-patient treatment and support accommodation space.

At around 5,500m² in size, the centre will be used by around 65,000 out-patients each year - with approximately 250 patients attending each day for care or treatment. It will also feature a dedicated lounge for younger patients, which was designed in partnership with the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The Baird Family Hospital is a new purpose-built hospital which will provide maternity, gynaecology, breast screening and breast surgery services. It will also include a neonatal unit, centre for reproductive medicine, an operating theatre suite, community maternity unit and research and teaching facilities. The hospital will be around 26,000m² in size, with over 1,000 rooms.

The hospital will feature only single rooms for patients and have physical links into Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital to allow easy transfer for patients.

The board will meet virtually on Thursday, February 19, at 10am.
