Why have we chosen this as a priority area of focus?
NHS Grampian is focusing on sustainability because we want to reduce our impact on the environment and help create healthier communities. We know that a healthy environment supports good health, so taking action on climate change is an important part of the care we provide.
We are working towards becoming a net zero organisation and supporting wider climate goals, including those agreed at COP26. This means looking at everything we do - not just our buildings and energy use, but also how we reduce waste, reuse materials, and recycle more.
To do this, we are making changes across our services. This includes promoting greener travel policies, delivering care in more sustainable ways, using our buildings more efficiently, and working closely with local communities. Together, these actions will help us build a more sustainable and resilient healthcare service for the future.
What do we want to see 10 years from now?
- Thinking about the environmental impact becomes a normal part of our decision-making.
- We lead by example and can demonstrate our contribution.
- We are an employer of choice for the young 'environmentally aware' generation because of 'sustainability credentials'.
- As part of our infrastructure developments, we consider 'collapsible'/adaptive options that would be more flexible and responsive to changing needs. All future estates will reflect the NHS Sustainable Design and Construction Guide.
How will we know if we have achieved that?
- We are fully paperless and maximise the use of technology, including Artificial Intelligence.
- Realistic Medicine is fully embedded in all of our practices.
- Our estate is fit for purpose and meets the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals.
- We have maximised the implementation of hybrid working.
- We generate our own energy.
- We are prepared and resilient to deal with the future climate conditions, such as increased frequency of heat waves and flooding events.
