Information for Patients
What is Clinical Genetics?
In Clinical Genetics, we see adults and children who have a personal and/or family history of a confirmed or suspected genetic condition or cancer.
Sometimes, we can offer genetic testing to help identify a genetic diagnosis. We then may offer genetic testing to relatives to help determine if they could also develop a genetic condition.
Using family history information (we may send you a questionnaire to obtain this information prior to your appointment), we may make screening recommendations for you and/or your relatives.
We may also refer patients to other health professionals, and provide details about applicable research studies and support organisations.
What happens at a Clinical Genetics appointment?
At your appointment (which may be telephone, video, or face-to-face), the doctor, nurse, or genetic counsellor will review your personal and family history information. If appropriate, you may be examined. We may also take photographs, with your consent, to document your clinical features. If you require any genetic testing, this usually involves a blood sample. If it is not possible to take the blood sample at the clinic appointment, this may be arranged through your GP Practice or local Community Hub, where appropriate.
We would be happy for you to bring someone along to your appointment if you wish. However, please be aware that we may discuss sensitive or confidential issues relating to your health at your appointment. If you plan to bring several relatives to your appointment, please let us know before your appointment, to allow us to check the space and time available for your appointment. If you need any additional assistance, such as an interpreter, please let us know before your appointment.
How long will my appointment take?
