Hearing Aid Self-Help

Hearing aids have a typical lifespan of at least 4-5 years. Good care and maintenance will maximise your hearing aids life-span.

Troubleshooting for all hearing aids

If the hearing aid is not working (no sound or low output):

  • Check the battery is in the correct way, and/or change battery
  • Check the ear mould, thin tube or receiver for blockages e.g wax or condensation and clear if able to (using cleaning wire or cleaning brush provided at you hearing aid fitting)
  • Replace tube if able to do so, see re-tubing page for guidance (link to retube page)

If the Hearing Aid is Whistling:

  • Check the hearing aid mould / dome has been inserted into the ear properly
  • Check the ear mould, thin tube or receiver for blockages e.g wax or condensation and clear (using cleaning wire or cleaning brush provided at you hearing aid fitting)
  • Replace tube if able to do so, see re-tubing page for guidance (link to retube page)
  • Check for loose fitting, damage to the elbow/hook, tube, or mould.
  • Consider having ears checked for wax
