A pharmacy can be opened by anybody, anywhere in Scotland. However, if someone wishes to provide NHS pharmaceutical services to the public, they can only do so with collaboration and permission of the relevant NHS Board. To do this the NHS Board and the applicant must now carry out a joint pre-application consultation with the public in the area of the proposed new pharmacy, before submitting an application to the relevant NHS Board.
Following the completion of the joint pre-application consultation, the Board and the applicant must agree upon and produce a consultation analysis report. The report must detail the level of support of residents in the neighbourhood to which the application relates.
