Teeth TLC - Seven steps to a great smile

NHS Grampian is launching a new advertising campaign aimed at reminding everyone in the North East that good oral health begins at home.
The Teeth TLC campaign promotes seven steps to a great smile and over the coming weeks this will feature on TV, radio and newspaper adverts as well as on buses and in bus shelters.
Consultant in Dental Public Health Ray Watkins said "Grampian's record on dentistry and oral health is better now than it has ever been. There is no waiting list for an NHS dentist in Aberdeen City and we've made significant reductions to the waiting lists in Aberdeenshire and Moray. There are more adults and children registered with the NHS than ever before. However, we want to do more and encourage everyone to show their teeth some TLC every day, rather than just relying on a twice yearly visit to the dentist.
Research suggests that more than half of all adults living in some areas of Grampian do not attend regular NHS dental care. We are aware that a significant number use private care but our estimation is that up to 100,000 people (children and adults) in Grampian have no access to routine dental care and with the previous long waiting lists have been put off dentistry for life. We really want to reach out to this group in particular and show them how straightforward it is to take care of their own teeth and mouth."
The seven steps to a great smile are:
  • Cut out fizzy drinks and eat healthier snacks
  • Brush twice a day and replace your brush regularly
  • Use a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste
  • Use a circular brushing motion
  • Brush for two minutes
  • Spit don't rinse (after toothbrushing )
  • Visit your dentist regularly
Teeth TLC is a Grampian wide campaign and part of the health board's ongoing commitment to improving oral and dental health.
