New healthpoint to open in Elgin

A new health advice service for Moray is being officially opened on Friday January 13, 2012 in Dr Gray's concourse.

Healthpoint  provides quality health information and advice to the general public and local professionals.

It is a free service which offers confidential information and advice from trained staff on a wide range of topics, including:
  • Practical ways to improve your health, such as healthy eating and stopping smoking
  • Information on health conditions and concerns
  • Information on long term conditions e.g. diabetes and asthma
  • Links to support groups and organisations
  • How to access NHS services
  • Access to free condoms.
The facility will be opened by NHS Grampian's Chief Executive, Richard Carey. He said: "The new service will play a key role in promoting health and wellbeing, self care and supporting health improvement in Moray."

The hospital concourse was selected by NHS Grampian and local partners as the best permanent site for the service.

The official opening coincides with the healthpoint's 'A New Year, A New You campaign.'

During January 2012, NHS Grampian will be inviting the public to come in and visit the new healthpoint to get information and advice on stopping smoking, weight management, physical activity and to get their mini-lifestyle check.

Healthpoint advisors will be available to carry out these mini-lifestyle checks. These checks are confidential and take on average 20-30 minutes each to conduct.

The session covers measurement of height, weight, calculation and importantly an explanation of BMI (Body Mass Index) and an explanation of blood pressure measurement. The healthpoint advisor will discuss the results of these measurements with the customer, as well as offer support regarding aspects of health behaviour such as: smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise, diet, stress management, mental health and wellbeing.

These checks will be available in all NHS Grampian healthpoint locations; Aberdeen Indoor Market; Dr Gray's Hospital, Elgin; 58A High Street, Fraserburgh; The Hot Spot, 1-3 Kirk Street, Peterhead.

The NHS Grampian healthpoint service can be accessed by visiting your local healthpoint, calling the free healthline on 0500 20 20 30 or by emailing healthpoint@nhs.net

You can also text the word 'INFO' to 82727 and a healthpoint advisor will call you back.
