Cancer Genetics
Clinical services for patients with a family history of cancer are available in the North of Scotland. The Scottish Guidelines for risk assessment and surveillance of familial cancers are used, and the North of Scotland Genetics Service is actively involved in the regular updating of these guidelines.
Cancer genetic clinics are held in Aberdeen and Inverness, with outreach clinics in Orkney and Shetland. A Combined Breast/Genetic clinic also offers regular follow-up for patients with a very high risk for familial breast cancer.
Patients with a suspected family history of cancer should be referred to the Cancer Genetics Service, Medical Genetics, Ashgrove House, Foresterhill Hospitals, Aberdeen.
Patients who are referred to the service are sent a questionnaire to obtain family history, which is then researched and confirmed where possible before an appointment is sent to them.
