Protocols

Scotland-wide protocols for referral have not yet firmly been established. The initial phase of funding is to be aimed at the following cancer scenarios. These referral guidelines will be updated as new information is available and national decisions made.

Hodgkins Lymphoma:

• Restaging at the end of treatment

Lung cancer:

• Pre-operative assessment, to look for presence of metastatic spread
• Investigation of solitary pulmonary nodules when an FNA is not possible or has failed
• Patients who are candidates for radical radiotherapy

Colorectal cancer:

• Staging prior to consideration for liver resection
• Rising tumour markers where conventional imaging has failed

There are other patients in whom a PET scan may have a useful problem-solving role. These referrals will also be considered, on an individual basis.
