Grampian Osteoporosis Services

Around 3500 scans are performed per annum with reports to referrer and/or copy to GP. All referrals must be signed by a medical practitioner following IR(ME)R guidelines. It is possible for non-medical staff to refer to the service. Specific referral protocols must be developed for the individual and then IR(ME)R certification gained.  Currently, specialist nurses from Respiratory and Breast clinics refer.

Waiting times for scan vary with the degree of urgency of the referral:

Urgent (first available appointment): new steroid therapy, vertebral fractures, transplant assessments)

Routine (within 3 months): all other referrals.
