National Alcohol Awareness Week October 4 - 10, 2009
The Scottish Government have announced the return of Alcohol Awareness Week (AAW) taking place 4-10 October 2009 the third such event to take place since 2007.
The theme of this year's campaign is 'Get More Out Of....' It aims to raise awareness that making positive lifestyle choices, and drinking more responsibly will enable Scots to get more out of their day, at home, at work and with friends or family.
Locally, the three Grampian Alcohol & Drug Partnerships (ADP's) are supporting the campaign. They are reinforcing this key message through a series of public engagement events across Grampian, and by the development of a Grampian specific pilot initiative 'Howmuchdoidrink.com'
This exciting and innovative project will build on the findings of the 2008 'Usual Suspects' survey where over 1500 people provided actual and perceived views about drinking behaviours and attitudes.
Members of the public will be invited to sign up to a unique four week online alcohol diary which records consumption, calories, time and money spent on alcohol. The results will be collated and fed back to provide individuals with confidential detailed feedback on how alcohol affects their lifestyle generally. Respondents will get an overview of their relationship to alcohol, comparing it to recommended guidelines. They will be encouraged to 'get more out of life' through the adoption of moderate and responsible alcohol consumption, with feedback tailored to each participant. The diary will also record reactions to the feedback including indications of behaviour change.
Fraser Hoggan, Health Improvement Officer Alcohol and Drugs for NHS Grampian said:
"We are hoping to add to this year's message by providing the unique opportunity to examine our personal relationship with alcohol, and where appropriate lead to behavioural change in turn 'getting more out of life', by being able to see how moderate and responsible drinking can have a positive influence on our lifestyle as a whole."
Staff will promoting the 'how much do I drink' campaign to the public and will be providing information on alcohol and the body, alcohol and safety, units and tips for safe drinking. Take away unit measuring cups, unit calculators and drinks diaries, will also be available.
