People with diabetes are being urged to join an exercise class being launched at 12.30 on Tuesday, September 2 in the Rescue Hall, Peterhead.
Run by NHS Grampian, the aim of the class is to encourage people to eat healthily, take appropriate exercise and get a better understanding of their condition.
The classes will run for 90 minutes, about 50 minutes of which will be exercises in a circuit style followed by a lifestyle discussion.
A specially trained cardiac instructor with diabetes knowledge will be on hand, supported by a nurse.
Laura Walker of the Grampian diabetes 'managed clinical network' is the organiser.
She said: "The exercises are specifically designed for people with diabetes to help them improve and maintain fitness levels. Over a period of time improved fitness will give them a better and higher quality of life. You do not need to be very fit to join - all you need to do is be able to walk a mile on the flat.
"The classes will begin with light exercises so the leader can assess the fitness of members over four weeks. Participants will also be taught how to judge the amount of effort to put into exercises.
"On completing the introductory phase, members will enter the full class regime which may be exercise to music or be based on exercise equipment. The routines will last about an hour and are aimed at helping the heart to function to its best potential. The exercises are intended to be enjoyable and will build up and maintain the cardiovascular system.
"People will exercise to the point where heart and lungs are operating at a faster rate but at a level where they feel comfortable, followed by a period of relaxation.
"We emphasise that if at any time people feel overtired or ill while exercising they must stop and inform the instructor right away."
The programme will run indefinitely provided there is sufficient support from participants.
Diabetes UK has provided generous financial support but a contribution of £2.50 per person is being sought to cover costs. Partners are welcome.
Anyone interested in joining must be referred through their GP or hospital consultant. Further details are available form Laura Walker on 01224 555508.
