Influenza A (H1N1) statement - 26 June 2009

NHS Grampian can today (Friday 26 June) report that a total of four people in Grampian have been confirmed as having influenza A (H1N1).

The clinical condition of the four confirmed cases is not giving any cause for concern.

Medical Director, Dr Roelf Dijkhuizen said, "The number of confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) in Grampian remains very small, which is reassuring, however we know that there is community transmission elsewhere in Scotland and we must be prepared to deal with this in Grampian.  Our planning and preparing continues across all our hospital, community and primary care settings and involves partner agencies as well as healthcare staff."

Good hygiene has a very important role to play in preventing the spread of infections.  Practical actions include:

  • using a tissue to cover your mouth when coughing and/or sneezing, disposing of the tissue promptly and then washing your hands
  • washing hands frequently with soap and water, especially after coughing, sneezing and using tissues
  • avoiding touching your mouth, eyes and nose unless you have recently cleaned your hands
  • using normal household detergent and water to clean surfaces frequently touched by hands
