Members required for NHS Ethics Committee

The NHS North of Scotland Research Ethics Committee is looking for members of the public to volunteer time to be a member of the NHS Ethics Service.  The service reviews all research protocols relating to NHS patients, services, and staff.  The committee meets once a month, and members must be over the age of 18 years.

The purpose of a Research Ethics Committee in reviewing the proposed study is to protect the dignity, rights, safety and well being of all actual or potential research participants.

Dr Alex Johnstone, the Vice-Chair of the Committee said, "Lay members have a key role to play in this review process and we are dependant on continued input from non-scientists in maintaining the good quality of research conducted within the NHS in the North of Scotland."

Ethics Committees provide independent advice to participants, researchers, funders, sponsors, employers, care organisations and professionals on the extent to which proposals for research studies comply with recognised ethical standards.

Dr Julie Kelly, the Scientific Advisor for the Committee said, "We welcome people of all ages and all walks of life.  You don't need any special skills; just a lively, enquiring personality and training will be provided."

For further information please contact Dr Julie Kelly, Scientific Advisor & Manager, North of Scotland Research Ethics Service; Telephone: 01224 558480 or email julie.kelly@nhs.net

These Committees adhere to the current Governance Arrangements for NHS Research Ethics Committees in accordance with GAFREC Principles.  The Committees are fully compliant with the International Committee on Harmonisation/Good Clinical Practice (ICH) guidelines for the conduct of trials involving the participation of human subjects as they relate to the responsibilities, composition, function, operations and records of an Independent Ethics Committee/ Independent Review Board (IEC/IRB).

On 1 April 2007, the Grampian Committees formally became the North of Scotland Research Ethics Service covering Grampian, Highlands and Islands, Orkney and Shetland.
