Drug deaths

NHS Grampian and Grampian Police are concerned that recent deaths in Grampian may be attributable to illegal drug use.

Grampian Police are currently investigating five recent deaths that have occurred within the past seven days.  Enquiries are at an early stage but the deaths are not thought to be connected.

NHS Grampian Health Improvement Officer Fraser Hoggan said:

"Drug use is always a potentially high-risk activity.  Taking any illegal drug is hazardous and potentially unpredictable and the risk of overdose increases when taken in combination with other substances, including prescribed medication and/or alcohol."

Drugs Action General Manager Senga MacDonald added:

"If you do come across a potential situation - always call for an ambulance immediately, and importantly always stay with the person until it arrives."

"Every single drug related death is a tragic waste of life, which causes considerable distress and upset to family, friends and professionals involved."
