Benefits of being on the Register

Other financial benefits may be easier to access if on the register including

  • Disability living allowance (DLA)- separate care and mobility component (not means tested)
  • Blue badge for free parking
  • Carer's allowance for parent to look after a child with sight impairment (not means-tested)
  • Child Tax Credit: for parents who work 16 or more hours a week
  • Motability Scheme for children who receive the high rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance
  • National Entitlement Card can entitle children over 5 years of age to access leisure, library and information services
  • Companion Card can provide discounted travel for any person accompanying a child over 5 years of age
  • Half price TV licence for children registered blind
  • Free BT directory enquiries service
  • Free postage of CD's, large print, Braille or audiotapes for a child registered as Blind or Partially sighted
  • Cinema Exhibitors Card provides a discount for carers who accompany a person who is visually impaired
  • You may be able to get help with fares to hospital if your child is under 16.  If a parent is in receipt of certain benefits they will qualify for help with travel costs to hospital services. For further advice re travel costs contact your local social support services or the General Office at your main hospital.
  • Community Care Grants assist people to live independently in the community. Information is available at your local Jobcentre Plus or on www.dwp.gov.uk 
  • Free travel is available for children over 5 years of age on buses, trains and ferries within Scotland. See www.travelinescotland.com for details.
