Notes
- Send blood for culture and aspirate abscess
- Specialist advice from medical microbiology is essential.
 
Likely organism
Coliforms
Staphylococcus aureus
Pneumococcus
Streptococcus milleri
Oral anaerobes
 
1st choice antibiotic
Ceftriaxone 2g IV every 12 hours 
plus
Metronidazole 500mg IV every 8 hours
 
Comments
Depending on culture results and response, switch to appropriate oral therapy to complete 4-6 weeks treatment
